Duranta repens or Cayenne Vanilla

Reference : DUR-REP-000-1L

Duranta repens, also known as Cayenne Vanilla, is a prized evergreen shrub valued for its ornamental appeal, particularly in warm climates. Dense and bushy, it showcases vibrant green foliage throughout the year, adorned with stunning clusters of violet-blue flowers edged in white. This remarkable bloom, offering a beautiful bicolor contrast, lasts for several months in warm climates, overlapping with the appearance of the first fruits.

These small, orange-yellow fruits appear abundantly, adding an extra decorative touch. However, as Duranta is not frost-tolerant, it should be grown in containers in most regions of France to be protected during the winter months.

Description

Origin of Duranta repens

Duranta repens, native to the southern United States, Mexico, Central, and South America, belongs to the Verbenaceae family, alongside Lantana, Clerodendron, and Verbenas. It naturally grows in rocky coastal areas or more humid low-altitude regions. Introduced to Europe in the late 16th century, it has since spread to gardens in Mediterranean, subtropical, and tropical climates, becoming invasive in some countries like Australia and China.

This spectacular shrub, often known as Vanillier de Cayenne, is characterized by its dense, bushy growth, with flexible stems that extend outward before cascading down, typically reaching 2 to 3 meters in height. Its well-branched stems may be slightly thorny and are adorned with small, bright green, persistent leaves with slightly toothed edges.

Flowering Season

Duranta repens begins to flower in May and can continue until September in warm climates like the French Riviera, while in northern France, flowering typically starts in early September. Its blooms consist of 10-centimeter-long panicles, featuring small violet-blue flowers with white edges, creating a striking bicolor effect. These vanilla-scented flowers are followed by small, spherical orange-yellow fruits that contrast with the foliage. This plant can be toxic if ingested.

Growing Duranta repens Outdoors

In mild climates, this shrub thrives in full sun or light shade, in well-drained soil that can be fresh or dry. Elsewhere in France, it is best grown in pots so it can be sheltered from frost during winter. With its exotic charm, Duranta repens fits beautifully into Mediterranean gardens, particularly when paired with plants like Caesalpinia gilliesii, Sesbania punicea, or Cassia floribunda, creating a vibrant tropical scene.
