Euryops 'Sunshine Silver' – Silver-Foliaged Bush Daisy with Bright Yellow Flowers All Year

Reference : EUR-SUN-1L

Euryops 'Sunshine Silver' is a persistently beautiful shrub of exceptional ornamental generosity, born from a natural cross at the famous Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in South Africa. Its name says it all: "Silver" for its finely divided luminous silver-grey foliage — an absolutely remarkable year-round asset — and "Sunshine" for its large bright yellow daisies that light up the garden virtually all year, with two flowering peaks in spring and autumn. Bushy, dense, naturally rounded, semi-hardy and tolerant of sea spray — a first-choice Mediterranean and coastal shrub. Find it among our botanical curiosities and collection perennials.

Description

What is Euryops 'Sunshine Silver'?

Euryops 'Sunshine Silver' (also sold as Euryops pectinatus 'Sunshine Silver' or 'Silver Sunshine') is an exceptional natural hybrid, born from a spontaneous cross-pollination in the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town, South Africa. The Kirstenbosch horticulturists discovered it in full bloom and immediately recognised the extraordinary ornamental value of this natural creation — a compact, naturally rounded, densely-habited shrub remarkable for both its foliage and its flowering.

The main parent identified with certainty is Euryops pectinatus (woolly resin bush), endemic to the sandstone slopes of the Western Cape. The most likely second parent is Euryops abrotanifolius (lace-leaf resin bush), known for its profusion of flowers, density of foliage and variable forms. The genus name Euryops derives from the Greek eurys ("broad, large") and ops ("eye, face") — referring to the large, showy flower heads of the genus. The cultivar name 'Sunshine Silver' celebrates both its silvery foliage and its sunny, prolific flowering.

What are the unique characteristics of Euryops 'Sunshine Silver'?

  • Finely divided silver-grey foliage — its absolute signature: this is the most immediately recognisable and decorative characteristic of this cultivar. The leaves are deeply divided into fine, regular, comb-like segments — hence pectinatus — of a grey-green to luminous silver-grey colour, due to a fine silky down covering the leaves and stems. This silvery sheen is far more pronounced in 'Sunshine Silver' than in the green form (E. pectinatus 'Viridis'). This evergreen foliage is a year-round ornamental asset — even out of season.
  • Large bright yellow daisies, near-continuous: numerous solitary flower heads of 4 to 5 cm in diameter, of a vivid, luminous yellow, held on long, slender stalks above the foliage, succeed each other with incomparable generosity. At peak flowering, the shrub literally disappears under the flowers — the silver foliage is no longer visible. The flowering is near-continuous with two major waves in spring and autumn. In very mild-winter regions, it can flower almost all year, pausing only during extreme summer heat and hard winter cold.
  • Silver/yellow visual contrast of exceptional readability: the contrast between the silver-grey foliage and the bright yellow flowers is one of the most effective and luminous available among evergreen shrubs — visible from a distance, structuring in a border, and particularly highlighted by raking light.
  • Bushy, dense, naturally rounded habit: the shrub spontaneously forms a compact, regular dome of 60 cm to 1.5 m in height for a slightly greater spread. Its dense structure and naturally harmonious habit make it an excellent structural plant in borders — requiring virtually no maintenance pruning.
  • Rapid growth: Euryops is one of the fastest-growing shrubs available — it is most spectacular and most floriferous in the first years after planting.
  • Sea spray and wind tolerance: inherited from its origins on the windswept, exposed slopes of the Cape, 'Sunshine Silver' copes very well with coastal gardens, salt spray and exposed positions — a precious quality for Atlantic and Mediterranean coastal gardens.
  • Excellent pollinator value: the large yellow daisies are outstanding nectar sources for bees, bumblebees and butterflies.

How to grow Euryops 'Sunshine Silver'?

  • Light: full sun is essential, sheltered from cold winter winds. Euryops produces its most abundant flowering and maintains its compact habit in a very sunny position. In partial shade, flowering reduces considerably. It prefers moderate temperatures — in Mediterranean regions it may suffer from excessive summer heat and flowers best in spring and autumn.
  • Soil: free-draining, light, even poor and calcareous. Waterlogging at the crown is its main enemy, particularly in winter. In open ground, lay a gravel mulch around the base. In containers, use a mix of free-draining compost with sand or perlite (1/3).
  • Watering: regular in the first year to support establishment. Once well rooted, it tolerates drought but prefers occasional watering for generous flowering. In containers, water regularly avoiding excess — monitor carefully during summer heat peaks.
  • Frost hardiness: semi-hardy — tolerance of -3°C to -5°C for short periods. Foliage suffers from -3°C; aerial parts can be destroyed at -5°C but often re-sprout from the roots in spring. In cool regions, grow preferably in a container to overwinter in a cool, bright, frost-free space. In mild regions, mulch the base in winter.
  • Planting: in spring (April-June) in cool regions, or in autumn in mild regions. Space plants 80 cm to 1 metre apart. Choose the final position carefully — Euryops dislikes being moved.
  • Feeding: a spring application of compost or balanced fertiliser stimulates growth and flowering. In containers, fertilise every 2-3 weeks from March to September.

What are the care requirements?

  • Light pruning after each flowering: the key operation for maintaining compact habit, stimulating branching and extending the plant's life. Prune lightly after each major flowering wave (spring and autumn). Avoid hard pruning which is often fatal.
  • Deadheading: remove spent flower heads at their base regularly to encourage new bud production and extend the flowering season.
  • Renewal by cuttings: Euryops is a relatively short-lived plant (3-5 years) that loses vigour over time. Renew it regularly by cuttings to have consistently beautiful, vigorous young plants.
  • Mulching: a good mulch at the base maintains moisture in summer and protects the roots from frost in winter.

Where to plant Euryops 'Sunshine Silver'?

  • In a Mediterranean or full-sun border: pair it with lavender (blue spikes contrasting magnificently with the yellow), Artemisia 'Powis Castle' (extending the silver palette), santolina (sea-spray resistant composition), or other silver-leaved Mediterranean plants.
  • In a pot or container on a terrace: ideal in a south- or west-facing position, sheltered from wind. Its rapid growth and near-continuous flowering make it a terrace star plant. Bring indoors to shelter in winter in cool regions.
  • In a coastal garden: its sea spray and wind tolerance make it indispensable in exposed seaside gardens — Atlantic or Mediterranean. Pair it with our collection perennials for lasting, generous coastal compositions.
  • In a gravel or rock garden: its compact habit and tolerance of dry, poor soils make it ideal for sunny mineral compositions.
  • As a standard (lollipop form): Euryops can be trained on a single stem to form a ball of yellow flowers on a stick — a very decorative effect for terraces and pathways.

What are the advantages for collectors?

  • A Kirstenbosch hybrid — an extraordinary origin: born spontaneously in one of the world's most famous botanical gardens, 'Sunshine Silver' carries a unique and fascinating botanical story.
  • The finest silver/yellow contrast available among shrubs: few shrubs combine the same intensity of silver foliage and yellow flowering in one plant — the visual effect is immediate, readable from a distance and luminous in all seasons.
  • One of the longest-flowering shrubs in horticulture: 6 months of visible flowering on average, near-continuous in mild regions — few ornamental shrubs offer comparable generosity.
  • An all-purpose shrub: border, container, rock garden, seaside, standard form — Euryops 'Sunshine Silver' adapts to all uses with equal success.

How to propagate Euryops 'Sunshine Silver'?

Two main methods:

  • By herbaceous stem cuttings: the recommended method, preferably in spring or early summer. Take 10-12 cm stem-tip cuttings above a node, remove the 2 lower leaves, plant in a slightly moist sandy substrate under a cold frame. Rooting in 6 to 8 weeks. Overwinter young plants under a cold frame and plant out the following spring.
  • By seed: in spring at 10 to 13°C. Note: seedlings may not faithfully reproduce the 'Sunshine Silver' cultivar characteristics.
