Fuchsia is a plant belonging to the Onagraceae family, native to the tropical and subtropical regions of South and Central America. The Onagraceae is a family of plants that includes more than 650 species of herbaceous, shrubby or arborescent plants.

Charles Plumier, a French cleric and botanist, played an important role in the history of fuchsia. Commissioned by King Louis XIV, he was the first to scientifically describe fuchsia in Central America in the 17th century. He also gave the genus the name "Fuchsia" in honour of his mentor, Leonhart Fuchs. Louis XIV organised botanical expeditions with the aim of developing the royal gardens of France and increasing the collection of rare and exotic plants in his kingdom. The royal gardens were seen as a symbol of wealth and prestige for the kingdom and botanical expeditions were intended to enrich them with rare and exotic plant specimens.

In addition, Louis XIV also saw botanical expeditions as a means of demonstrating France's scientific and cultural superiority over other European nations. He wanted the royal gardens to be recognised as the most beautiful and important in Europe and therefore encouraged scientists and botanists to explore new regions to discover new plants. Botanical expeditions also played an important role in the development of botany and horticulture in France. Scientists and botanists brought valuable knowledge about plants and their growth habits back to France, which contributed to the development of new techniques for gardening and plant cultivation.

You are looking for cold-resistant outdoor plants: Perennial fuchsias can withstand temperatures as low as -15°C. This ability to withstand low temperatures is linked to its ability to restart from its rootstock. Perennial fuchsias will give structure and colour to your garden.

Fuchsia is usually planted and cuttings taken in spring, but can also be taken in autumn. Fuchsias require half-shade or shade, especially in the afternoon. Fuchsia generally grows in all types of soil, and particularly likes cool, light soil, although it does well in clay.

The hybrid fuchsia is a flowering plant that is easy to care for. It can be overwintered in two ways: in a pot or in the ground. Our online garden centre offers you the possibility to select the varieties according to the place where you want to plant it.

If there was a choice to be made among all our fuchsia varieties, it would be the variety Fuchsia Blue Sarah. In addition to its unique blue colour, this variety has many other advantages.
