Fuchsia is a generous and free-flowering plant, but like any plant grown in a pot or garden, it can be affected by various fungal diseases and pest attacks. The good news: the vast majority of these problems can be easily prevented with good cultivation practices, and treated effectively once identified in time.
The four golden rules for preventing all fuchsia diseases
Prevention always comes before treatment. These four rules, applied rigorously, dramatically reduce the risk of the vast majority of diseases and pest infestations:
- Never water late in the evening or in full midday sun. Wet foliage at night encourages fungal development. Watering in full sun causes leaf scorch and heat stress.
- Water without excess — slightly too dry is better than too wet. Overwatering is the primary cause of root rot and fungal development. Always check substrate moisture before watering.
- Balanced fertilising, without excess. Excess nitrogen produces soft, lush foliage — highly attractive to aphids and mites. A balanced N-P-K 20-20-20 fertiliser at moderate doses is ideal.
- Well-aerated compost for potted fuchsias. A compacted, poorly draining substrate creates anaerobic conditions favourable to root fungi. See our guide on the ideal fuchsia compost.
Fungal diseases of fuchsia
Brown rust — Puccinia epilobii
Symptoms: Rust first appears as small pale yellow halos on the upper surface of leaves. On the corresponding underside, round powdery rust-brown pustules appear — these are the fungal spores. Affected leaves gradually yellow and drop. In severe attacks, the plant can defoliate rapidly.
Causes: This fungus spreads through spores carried by wind and moisture. Warm, humid conditions in late summer are particularly favourable to its development.
Treatment: Remove and destroy (do not compost) all affected leaves. Treat the plant with a sulphur- or copper-based fungicide, covering both leaf surfaces thoroughly. Repeat treatment every 10 to 14 days. As prevention, avoid wetting the foliage when watering.
Sooty mould
Symptoms: Sooty mould appears as a black, sooty deposit — like soot — covering leaves and stems. It does not directly attack plant tissue but blocks photosynthesis and progressively weakens the plant.
Causes: This fungus develops on honeydew — the sweet, sticky substance secreted by aphids, whitefly and scale insects. Sooty mould is therefore always a symptom of an underlying pest infestation.
Treatment: First eliminate the honeydew-producing pests (see pests section below). The sooty mould can then be cleaned with a damp cloth or treated with diluted insecticidal soap. Recovery is generally rapid once the source is removed.
Grey mould — Botrytis cinerea
Symptoms: Botrytis appears as a grey, fluffy mould on leaves, stems, flowers and flower buds. Affected tissue turns brown, rots and becomes covered in the characteristic grey mycelium. Flowers are often the first affected, especially in humid conditions.
Causes: This fungus thrives in high humidity, low light and cool temperatures below 15°C — typically during winter storage in an unheated greenhouse or during repeated rainy periods. Poor air circulation strongly aggravates the problem.
Treatment: Immediately remove and destroy all affected parts. Improve ventilation around the plant. Treat with an approved pyrethamine- or carbendazim-based fungicide. During winter storage, ensure regular ventilation of the storage area, avoid excessive watering and remove fallen dead leaves from the ground.
Root rot
Symptoms: The plant shows unexplained general wilting despite correct watering. Foliage yellows then dries out. When removed from the pot, roots appear brown, soft and foul-smelling instead of white and firm.
Causes: Caused by chronic overwatering and/or a poorly draining substrate. Fungi of the genus Phytophthora and Pythium colonise the suffocating roots and cause them to rot.
Treatment: If the plant is still partially viable, remove it from the pot, cut all affected roots with a sterilised tool, allow the healthy roots to air-dry for a few hours, then repot in fresh, free-draining substrate with a drainage layer at the pot base. Reduce watering drastically. In severe cases, the plant often cannot be saved.
Fuchsia pests
Aphids
Symptoms: Aphids colonise young shoots, flower buds and the underside of leaves. They cause leaf distortion, shoot curling and honeydew production that encourages sooty mould. They are easily spotted with the naked eye: small green, black or pink insects gathered in colonies.
Treatment: For light attacks, a powerful jet of water is often sufficient to dislodge colonies. For heavier infestations, treat with black insecticidal soap or a natural pyrethrin-based solution. The presence of ladybirds and lacewings in the garden provides excellent natural biological control.
Spider mites — Tetranychus urticae
Symptoms: Spider mites cause fine stippling discolouration on the upper leaf surface, giving a bronzed or silvery appearance. Very fine silky threads (webbing) can be observed on the underside. Affected leaves turn brown and drop. These pests proliferate in hot, dry conditions.
Treatment: Increase ambient humidity (regular misting of the foliage) — spider mites dislike moisture. Treat with an approved acaricide or insecticidal soap solution, focusing on the leaf undersides. Repeat treatment 2 to 3 times at 7-day intervals to eliminate eggs.
Whitefly
Symptoms: Small winged white insects take flight in a cloud at the slightest contact with the plant. The larvae, fixed to the underside of leaves, feed on sap and produce honeydew. Foliage gradually yellows and weakens.
Treatment: Yellow sticky traps monitor and reduce adult populations. Treat with potassic soap- or neem oil-based insecticide, covering leaf undersides thoroughly. Biological control by introduction of Encarsia formosa is highly effective in greenhouses.
The fuchsia gall mite — Aculops fuchsiae
Aculops fuchsiae is the most feared and most fuchsia-specific pest. It is an acarid invisible to the naked eye — the female measures only 0.25 mm, with an elongated pale yellow to white body — that can cause considerable and irreversible damage if not detected and treated promptly. It thrives in cool, humid temperatures and hibernates in the soil during winter.
Symptoms and progression:
- Early stages: slight wilting of terminal buds, then distortion of young leaves sometimes accompanied by reddish colouration. The mite's feeding punctures cause the tissues to swell and form pale green to red galls — internal galleries in which it lives and reproduces. These leaf galls resemble those of peach leaf curl.
- Intermediate stages: leaves become covered with a powdery white veil that can be confused with powdery mildew. Shoots turn reddish. The plant takes on a stunted, sickly appearance that is very characteristic.
- Advanced stages: flowers deform in turn and no longer open normally. The mite actively follows the plant's growth, leaving formed galls to attack new leaves and shoots — making eradication particularly difficult.
How it spreads: Aculops spreads by wind and insects, but the transport of infested plants and exchanges of contaminated cuttings are the most widespread mode of propagation. The female lays around fifty eggs that hatch on average within seven days, ensuring very rapid multiplication.
How to control it:
- Immediate mechanical action: at the very first symptoms, remove all affected branches by cutting well below the visibly affected area. In severe infestations, cut all branches back to ground level. If possible, also remove 3 to 4 cm of topsoil around the plant to limit overwintering mites in the soil. Burn all green waste immediately — never compost it. Thoroughly disinfect tools and hands with alcohol after each intervention.
- Natural treatment: spray a black soap solution (1 tablespoon in 1 litre of lukewarm water) on all affected parts, preferably late in the day. This natural treatment does not fully eradicate the mite but effectively reduces the infestation. Repeat as needed.
- Acaricide treatment: in severe infestations, use an approved acaricide labelled for amateur garden use. Repeat treatment several times. In the most severe cases, it is often preferable to destroy the entire plant to prevent spread to the rest of the collection. Isolate any suspect plant immediately. Reminder: conventional plant protection products have been withdrawn from sale to amateur gardeners since 1 January 2019.
Prevention: when purchasing or receiving fuchsias or cuttings, systematically inspect young shoots with a magnifying glass for signs of distortion or nascent galls. Place new plants in quarantine before integrating them into your collection.
Frequently asked questions about fuchsia diseases
My fuchsia is dropping its leaves — is this a disease?
Not necessarily. Leaf drop can have several causes: water stress (too much or too little water), heat stress, lack of light, or the onset of winter dormancy. Before suspecting a disease, check the cultivation conditions. If the leaves are dropping with spots, pustules or mould, consult the sections above to identify the problem.
Can I treat my fuchsia with natural products?
Yes — in the vast majority of cases, natural treatments are sufficient and preferable, notably black insecticidal soap, nettle liquid feed (natural tonic), horsetail decoction (preventive fungicide) and neem oil (versatile — both fungicidal and insecticidal). These products are particularly effective as prevention and for early treatment.
How do I prevent diseases spreading between my fuchsias?
Isolate any suspect plant immediately. Sterilise your cutting tools between each plant with alcohol or diluted bleach. Avoid working on wet plants. Remove and destroy (never compost) all affected parts. Good air circulation between plants is also an essential preventive factor.
Is my fuchsia lost if it has rust?
No. Brown rust is treatable and the plant can recover very well if intervention is prompt. Remove all affected leaves, treat with an appropriate fungicide and the plant will re-sprout. However, a neglected attack on an already weakened plant can be fatal. Prevention remains the best strategy.
